Which is better, Final Fantasy XIV or The Elder Scrolls Online?
Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online each suit a different MMO mood: Final Fantasy XIV emphasizes a continuous story, while The Elder Scrolls Online favors open-world freedom. Both offer solo activities and structured multiplayer, so neither is a universal winner.
Pick Final Fantasy XIV if you want a dramatic main narrative and group encounters with defined roles. Choose The Elder Scrolls Online if you want to wander, quest in your preferred order and spend more time exploring. For Black Friday 2026, match the edition to your device first. A great game on the wrong platform is no win.
Which game is better for solo players?
The Elder Scrolls Online is the stronger fit for players who want flexible solo exploration, while Final Fantasy XIV is the stronger fit for solo players who want a story-led journey. Both games include solo-friendly activities, and both support group content when you want company.
The key difference is the feel of the journey. Final Fantasy XIV connects its main story into a long, directed experience. The Elder Scrolls Online gives players a broad world and a more open questing rhythm. If you enjoy wandering between objectives, lean toward ESO. If a guided narrative keeps you invested, Final Fantasy XIV is a natural match.
Which MMO has better group content?
Final Fantasy XIV offers 4-player dungeons and 24-player alliance raids, while The Elder Scrolls Online offers 4-player dungeons and 12-player trials. The right choice depends on whether you prefer larger alliance encounters or smaller coordinated trials.
Final Fantasy XIV’s group sizes make it appealing to players who enjoy clearly organized raids and role-based teamwork. The Elder Scrolls Online’s dungeon and trial structure gives friend groups different scales of challenge. Before buying, consider how often your group meets and which platform everyone owns. Shared platform access matters more than a theoretical best-in-class raid.
Do the editions work across PC, PlayStation and Xbox?
Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online sell platform-specific editions, so a Windows PC purchase is not the same license as a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S version. Check the platform name on the product listing before checkout.
Account rules, entitlements and online requirements also affect how a purchase works across devices. Read the store details for the exact edition you plan to buy, especially if you already have an account or own another version. For friends playing together, compare platform access as a group first. That simple step avoids buying an edition that does not match your setup.
What should you check before buying either MMO?
Before buying Final Fantasy XIV or The Elder Scrolls Online, check platform compatibility, included content, account requirements and any ongoing online costs. Those four details determine whether an edition fits your device and how you plan to play.
Look at the edition name carefully: a standard edition and a collection are not interchangeable. Confirm what content is listed, then check the product’s store page for current account and subscription details. If you are buying for a friend, verify their console or computer platform first. Black Friday 2026 is a good time to compare the options, but the right edition still comes down to fit.
Buying Guide
Start with your platform
Choose one of 3 platform groups first: PC/Mac, PlayStation or Xbox. Buy the matching edition, and confirm the exact console generation or computer requirements on the store listing.
Match the game to your play style
Pick Final Fantasy XIV for a story-first MMO and The Elder Scrolls Online for open-world exploration. Your preferred pace matters more than a feature checklist.
Compare edition scope
A Standard Edition and a Collection have different content scope. Read the included-content list for the exact edition, rather than assuming every product name includes the same expansions.
Check the group sizes you want
Final Fantasy XIV has 4-player dungeons and 24-player alliance raids. The Elder Scrolls Online has 4-player dungeons and 12-player trials. Choose around your regular group.
Review account and online requirements
Check the store page for account linking, online access and subscription details before checkout. Digital entitlements can be platform-specific, so confirm every requirement for your chosen edition.
FAQ
Which game should I buy for Black Friday 2026, Final Fantasy XIV or The Elder Scrolls Online?
Final Fantasy XIV is the better fit for a guided, story-heavy MMO, while The Elder Scrolls Online suits open-world exploration and flexible questing. Compare the exact platform editions and included content before choosing. Your preferred play style is the strongest deciding factor.

Is The Elder Scrolls Online good for solo players?
The Elder Scrolls Online is a strong solo pick for players who like exploring a large fantasy world and choosing their own questing pace. Group play remains available through 4-player dungeons and 12-player trials, so solo adventures do not close off multiplayer.
