Is a LaCie Rugged drive better than a standard external hard drive?
LaCie Rugged Mini 2TB Portable External Hard Drive suits travel, while Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive is a simple choice for stationary backups. LaCie sells rugged HDDs and SSDs.
A rugged HDD still has moving parts and transfers files more slowly than an SSD. LaCie Rugged SSD 1TB Portable External Solid State Drive combines faster transfers with solid-state storage and an IP67 rating. Choose a rugged HDD for capacity, an SSD for speed and frequent travel, or a standard HDD for desk-based backups.
Which LaCie Rugged drive is best for Black Friday 2026?
LaCie Rugged Mini 2TB Portable External Hard Drive is a capacity-focused choice for travelers. LaCie Rugged SSD 1TB Portable External Solid State Drive suits faster file work, with up to 1,050 MB/s read speed and an IP67 rating. LaCie Rugged SSD Pro 1TB Portable Thunderbolt 3 Solid State Drive targets professional workflows with Thunderbolt 3 and up to 2,800 MB/s read speed.
Check the computer, port and cable before choosing. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee the advertised transfer rate, and Thunderbolt performance requires a compatible host and cable.
Should you choose a rugged HDD or a rugged SSD?
LaCie Rugged Mini 2TB Portable External Hard Drive prioritizes capacity; LaCie Rugged SSD 1TB Portable External Solid State Drive prioritizes speed. HDDs suit backups and large media libraries, while SSDs transfer files faster and handle mobile work more comfortably.
Choose an HDD for archives that stay at home or in a bag. Choose an SSD for regular travel and frequent transfers. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable files; one external drive is not a complete backup plan.
Are standard portable hard drives good for backups?
Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive and Western Digital WD Elements 2TB Portable External Hard Drive are USB-powered options for everyday storage and backups. Both use USB 3.0 connections.
Use a portable HDD for scheduled backups, photos and documents. Neither model is positioned as rugged, so protect it from drops, dust and moisture during transport. Set a regular backup schedule, safely eject the drive and keep a separate copy of important files.
What should you compare before choosing an external drive?
LaCie Rugged SSD 1TB Portable External Solid State Drive suits speed and protection, while Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive suits straightforward capacity. Compare storage space, drive type, connection and protection claims.
Check the computer's supported USB or Thunderbolt standard, then choose HDD or SSD based on transfer needs. An IP rating describes dust and water resistance; drop-resistance claims describe a separate form of protection. For a mostly stationary archive, premium SSD speed may not add value.
