How We Picked
- Compared published read and write speed claims, while noting that real transfers depend on the computer, cable, file size and workload.
- Prioritized USB-C compatibility and included connection details so shoppers can check their laptop, tablet, console or phone before buying.
- Weighed published dust, water and drop-resistance ratings for people carrying a drive between home, school and work.
- Reviewed capacity choices, warranty terms, portability and owner feedback to identify useful options at different performance levels.
- Selected products with clear use cases rather than treating the highest advertised speed as the best fit for everyone.

Crucial X6 vs Samsung T7 Shield: which portable SSD is better?
The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB is the stronger choice for rugged use, with IP65 protection and speeds up to 1,050 MB/s; the Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB prioritizes simple everyday storage with up to 800 MB/s read speed. The Samsung drive is built to handle dust, water exposure and drops better, while the Crucial drive makes sense for routine backups and carrying documents.
For travel, field work or moving media between locations, the T7 Shield's protection gives it the edge. For a home backup drive or a low-fuss way to expand laptop storage, the X6 covers the essentials. Neither advertised speed guarantees the same result on every device: the host port, cable and workload all matter.
Skip it if rugged protection is a must and the choice is the Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB. Choose the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB when durability ranks above a slimmer profile.
Is the Samsung T7 Shield faster than the Crucial X6?
The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB advertises read speeds up to 1,050 MB/s, compared with up to 800 MB/s for the Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB. That makes the Samsung model the faster option on paper, especially for larger transfers, but the gap matters most when the connected device supports fast USB storage.
For ordinary documents and periodic backups, both drives are responsive portable SSD choices. Large photo folders, video projects and frequent file moves make the T7 Shield's higher ceiling more relevant. A compatible USB-C connection alone does not guarantee top performance; the port standard and supplied cable also affect throughput.
The Samsung Portable SSD T9 1TB is a separate premium choice, advertising up to 2,000 MB/s read speed. That level calls for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 support, so it is not an automatic upgrade for every laptop.
Which portable SSD is more durable for travel?
The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB both offer IP65 protection and drop resistance up to 9.8 feet. Those ratings make each a better travel pick than a standard slim SSD without an IP rating, particularly for people carrying files outdoors or between work locations.
The Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB lists drop resistance up to 6.5 feet, and the Crucial X9 Portable SSD 1TB lists up to 7.5 feet. Neither model in this lineup lists an IP protection rating, so keep both away from rain and dust. Drop ratings also do not make a drive indestructible.
The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB is the clearest all-around rugged recommendation because it combines its IP rating with strong transfer speed. Buyers should still eject the drive safely, protect the connector and keep another copy of important files.
Which SSD is best for laptops, tablets and phones?
The Kingston XS1000 External SSD 1TB is a compact choice for travel, while the Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB offers straightforward extra storage for compatible laptops and tablets. Both are portable drives, but device support depends on the operating system, port, cable and file system rather than the SSD alone.
For laptop users who move large creative projects, the Samsung Portable SSD T9 1TB is the speed leader when the computer supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. The Samsung Portable SSD T7 1TB is a slimmer, balanced alternative for general home and office transfers. Tablets and phones need suitable USB storage support and enough power for the drive.
Check the device maker's compatibility information before using an SSD with a phone or tablet. For game consoles, confirm supported external storage formats and whether the drive stores games or runs them; those rules differ by system and game.
What should you choose during Black Friday 2026?
The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB is the best all-around Black Friday 2026 pick for shoppers who value durability, with IP65 protection and up to 1,050 MB/s read speed. The Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB is the practical budget-category choice for routine backups, while the Samsung Portable SSD T9 1TB is the premium speed option.
Compare the exact capacity and product name in the listing. SSD families include different sizes and generations, and a card or cable bundle does not change the drive's core speed rating. Check warranty coverage, included cables and return terms before ordering.
A Black Friday label is not a reason to buy more speed than your computer supports. Match the drive to your workload: basic storage, rugged travel or frequent large-file transfers. That approach keeps the purchase useful after the seasonal promotion ends.
Buying Guide
Choose capacity for your actual files
The Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB and Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB are practical starting points for laptop backups and media libraries. Estimate how much room photos, videos and project files consume, then leave space for future additions. A 1TB label describes capacity, not the usable space after formatting.
Match speed to your computer
The Samsung Portable SSD T9 1TB advertises up to 2,000 MB/s, but its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface needs matching computer support. The Crucial X6 Portable SSD 1TB has a lower up-to-800 MB/s read rating and suits less demanding storage tasks. Check the port specification before paying for speed.
Prioritize protection for regular travel
The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield 1TB and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB list IP65 protection. A standard drive such as the Samsung Portable SSD T7 1TB lacks that rugged rating. Use a protective case and keep any SSD away from liquid, even when the product has a water-resistance rating.
Check cables, compatibility and warranty
Confirm the included cable works with your computer, tablet or phone, and check file-system requirements before moving data. The Kingston XS1000 External SSD 1TB lists a five-year warranty, while warranty terms vary across models. Keep a separate backup of important files rather than relying on one portable drive.
